On the 18th of May, when entering the UK from abroad, investigative journalist Kit Klarenberg was stopped by Counter Terrorism police and asked about his work for the news organisation The Grayzone.

Truth Defence’s new Editor-in-Chief Mohamed Elmaazi interviewed Kit about his experience of being questioned under “terror” legislation and interrogated about his political views and journalistic work for outlets such as The Grayzone, Mint Press News and The Dissenter.

You can watch the full interview below.

Kit’s experience represents a disturbing omen of things to come. He was served with a “Notice of Detention under Schedule 3 to the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019” and interrogated for 5 hours.

He had no right to remain silent. He had no right to deny access to his electronic devices.

Kit was not suspected of any crime. He was not charged with an offence. Yet refusal to answer any question — or to provide PINs and passwords to all of his electronic devices — is an offence under the law and could have resulted in his arrest and prosecution.

Truth Defence exists to confront attacks on progressive political voices, whistleblowers, journalists and truth tellers of all kinds, which have become increasingly prevalent in societies which identify as democratic, including the UK.
